Mississippi has several area codes that cover different parts of the state. These area codes help identify local calling regions and connect residents, businesses, and organizations with telephone services across Mississippi. The state currently uses area codes 228, 601, 662, and 769, with 769 serving as an overlay for 601.
The 769 area code serves central and southern Mississippi, including Jackson, Hattiesburg, Meridian, Madison, and Ridgeland. It went into service on March 14, 2005, as an overlay for area code 601, meaning both codes serve the exact same geographic area. It runs on Central Time (CT), and calls within the region require mandatory 10-digit dialing….
The 662 area code serves northern Mississippi, including Southaven, Olive Branch, Tupelo, Oxford, Greenville, Cleveland, and Clarksdale. Authorities created it in 1999 when the original 601 area code split. Because 662 numbers were running low, Mississippi added a new overlay area code, 471, covering the same region starting in 2026. The 601 area code serves central and southern Mississippi, including Jackson, Hattiesburg, Meridian, Clinton, and Madison. Authorities created it in 1947 as one of the original 86 North American area codes, and Mississippi now uses four area codes. Since 2005, the 601 area code has shared its region with the 769 overlay code, requiring callers…
The 471 area code is a new telephone area code approved for northern and parts of central Mississippi. It overlays the existing 662 area code, so both area codes serve the same geographic area. Existing 662 numbers will remain unchanged, while providers will assign 471 numbers to new phone lines after the available 662 numbers…
The 228 area code serves the Gulf Coast of southern Mississippi, including Biloxi, Gulfport, and Pascagoula. It covers Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson counties, runs on Central Time, and has been in service since September 15, 1997. There is currently no overlay, so it’s the only area code for the region, and 7-digit local dialing is…
